Writing in the Workplace

In January 2007, Holy Trinity Catholic Media Arts College in Birmingham undertook a collaborative writing project with a local business: The Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Over a period of five weeks, a group of Year 10 students worked with staff at the Birmingham Rep and with local writer Clare Brown to develop the full range of writing skills for the workplace.

The students took notes, wrote letters, wrote press releases and reports and delivered a business pitch all themed around a single work-based project: the staging of the play Bulletproof Soul.

With a real sense of purpose to drive their functional writing and with advice and support from the professionals, students were able to see how writing really works.
