Writing clubs
Trialling a short series of extra-curricular writing clubs to motivate and support targeted children
Organisation: Holyhead Secondary School
Aim: Motivating underperforming pupils and giving keen writers a new outlet for their talents. Making writing fun.
Summary: A visiting writer was invited into school to work with a specific group of students, who had been identified as hard to reach, over a 6 week period for one session per week. The writer led four of the session and the teacher led the final two.
Sessions included writing exercises and activities, discussions, reading of work presented and given constructive criticism. Sessions were based around the mnemonic IDEA: initial ideas, drafting, editing and audience. Every session started with a warm-up exercise and then followed through with the rest of the writing process. The clubs spent time thinking about audience and how to publish their work.
