Words alive!

British Library resources support cross-curricular learning

Organisation: British Library Education Service/Camden LEA/Torbay LEA

Aim: To generate a range of resources, linked with collections at the British Library, to create cross-curricular links to support literacy work in schools.

Summary: 13 schools, across the two authorities, accessed the Words Alive! Website for six months and piloted suggested activities linked to three exhibition galleries and the unique range of material at The British Library in central London. The project created a programme of workshops and learning resources in all media.

There are now five on-line projects available Displaying the Written Word, Getting the Message Across, Victorian Britain, Special Books and In the News.

Each project offers a range of activities linked to original images from the Library’s collection, all referenced to the National Curriculum with specific literacy links, together with background information.

The Children’s Zone can be used to support interactive whiteboard activities.
