Inspiration aspiration partnership project
Enriching young people's experience of the arts
Organisation: Devon Arts in Schools Initiative (DAISI)
Aim: DAISI aims to develop the creativity of children and young people by enriching their experience of the arts and works closely with teachers, governors and artists to strengthen the relationship between the arts and education sectors.
The project partners wanted to join together arts/cultural organisations and schools to inspire creativity by working with arts professionals; also to raise the young people’s aspirations and broaden their horizons by developing their pride of local surroundings and resources.
Summary: The children and young people in primary and secondary schools worked with professional artists, poets, writers and drama practitioners during the project. This was an opportunity for them to enjoy an inspiring creative experience, and also to meet an inspiring individual - a real person who writes books or creates artworks. The young people visited places in their locality that they had never visited before: the beach, a local castle, a museum, archive or library. The artists and writers acted as interpreters of the environment and cultural locations and encouraged a fresh and new way of experiencing these places. Young people were then encouraged to produce creative work in workshops run by the arts professionals.
The young people publicly shared their achievements in celebratory events at primary and secondary schools which included live readings and performance, photographs, films, audio recordings and artworks. Participants read and performed their own work to teachers, students, parents, artists, governors and the wider school community.
