At a glance: Everybody Writes Day 2009
History, fantasy and adventure
St Philip’s CE Primary School, Cambridgeshire
- Reception pupils explored the theme of pirates, writing messages in bottles and making treasure maps
- Years 1 and 2 enjoyed reading George and the Dragon, by Chris Wormell, and wrote letters to the queen, wrote diary entries as the character of George, and made their own castles
- Years 3 and 4 explored the theme of Egyptians, making life-sized mummies of themselves, covered in words to describe themselves
- Years 5 and 6 worked firmly in the present, looking at Banksy’s graffiti art and its use of language, and creating their own work for the school’s graffiti wall
- A display of parents’ writing, with each parent completing the sentence ‘I am proud of my child because…’
Our ambitions for the future
St Michaels C of E Primary School, Bolton
- Each class took part, from Nursery to Year 6. Children took part in different writing activities throughout the day, building up to a piece of writing about what they want to be in the future.
- Nursery pupils painted huge pictures of themselves in the future
- Year 6 wrote letters of application for the job they aspire to in the future.
- The day culminated with an assembly and a whole school display of the children’s work. Staff and children thoroughly enjoyed the day which was reflected in high standard of work produced by each class.
- Parents had the opportunity to share in their children’s aspirations the following week at parents’ evening.
Everybody Writes Everywhere
St John’s Primary School, Weymouth, Dorset
- The whole school was involved with different writing activities for a day, from writing on the playground with giant chalks to writing up interviews with all of the office staff and the headteacher
WWII-themed Everybody Writes Day
Bovington Middle School, Dorset
- Teachers dressing up in 1940s period costume and a there was a real tank in the school playground.
- Children took part in a variety of writing activities linked to the theme of WWII and the school documented the day in pictures and film.
Pirates!
Broadfield Primary School, Hemel Hempstead
The school enjoyed a pirate-themed Everybody Writes week which included:
- Exploring a pirates’ cave to find inspiration for writing
- Writing online comic strips about pirates
- Working with visiting authors and poets
- Visiting a local paper mill to see how the paper we write on is made
- A family writing workshop
Reporting on the discovery of giant eggs
Portishead Primary School, Somerset
- Pupils investigated the discovery of giant eggs in the playground and wrote newspaper reports on the find
